Rincón de las Canallas

Rincón de las Canallas
Rincón de las Canallas (Tarapacá 810, e/San Francisco, Santiago) – if you want to visit a bar that once required a password to get in, this would be the place. El Rincón de las Canallas (“Riffraff’s Corner”) was a one-time clandestine meeting place for anti-Pinochet activists during the 1980s. The bar’s located back then was actually just 500 meters away from La Moneda palace, before it was subject to police raids (justifying a password to get in, which was every-changing at the time). What caused this bar to relocate to its current spot was actually skyrocketing real estate prices during the post-Pinochet period.
Along with beer and hard liquor, home-style Chilean meals are served here (some with colorful names like “Vietnamita”, “Terrorista” and “Atentado”). The bar’s walls are covered with artwork (often done by artists who couldn’t afford to pay for their meals & drinks with cash).
